Chairman praises citizenship ceremonies

Thursday 26 July 2007

Ceremonies that officially recognise and welcome new citizens to the UK have been praised by the Chairman of East Sussex County Council.

Since 2004, East Sussex County Council’s Registration Service has been holding citizenship ceremonies for successful applicants aged 18 and over who apply for UK citizenship. The ceremonies are held at the register office, town hall or other appropriate venue.

Councillor Bob Lacey OBE, Chairman of the County Council says that many new UK citizens have commented on how much they have enjoyed the ceremonies and the help they have received from Registration staff.

Councillor Lacey said: “I attended a ceremony recently at the County Council’s Registration Office in Hastings and was struck by the professionalism of our registration staff and how much the ceremony was appreciated by those attending. These ceremonies have quickly become a well-established and popular part of the citizenship process and I believe our Registration Service has played a big part in that success.”

New UK citizens must attend a citizenship ceremony within 11 weeks of receiving their invitation letter from the Home Office. Applicants are awarded UK citizenship after swearing the Oath of Allegiance to the Queen, and promising to be a loyal citizen.

For an additional fee, applicants can arrange a private ceremony to which more guests can be invited.
