Council takes action to keep roads safe

Tuesday 29 May 2007

East Sussex County Council has successfully prosecuted a utilities company for failing to meet safety standards and having undertrained staff at a roadworks site.

Southern Water was fined £1,000 at Lewes magistrates court for using road workers without the required qualifications and for failing to provide adequate signs at their works in North Way, Lewes.

This is the fifth time in a year that the County Council has successfully prosecuted a company for poor standards at roadworks and the third time that the prosecution has been against Southern Water. The total fines which are paid to HM Treasury now amount to £8,500.

The County Council is determined that companies must ensure a high standard of safety at all roadworks to protect their employees and the public.

Notes to editors

The case was heard at Lewes magistrates on Monday 21 May.

Southern Water pleaded guilty to a section 65 offences (lack of signing). They were fined £1000 with £700 costs.
