Press release

Tree decision for Bexhill

Friday 25 May 2007

Bexhill residents are being asked to suggest the type of tree they would like on a roundabout in their town.

The Silver Maple on the roundabout at the junction of Deans Drive and Bidwell Avenue is to be felled by East Sussex Highways in the interest of public safety as it is suffering from a parasitic fungus.

The fungus, which causes the tree to rot away, was found in 2004. The tree was cut back to make it safe but after continued inspection, a test has been carried revealing that less than a fifth of the tree is now solid wood.

The tree is to be felled in the interest of public safety but East Sussex Highways hope to replace it in a year or so once the area is clear of fungi spores.

Certain fruit-bearing trees or those with large root systems, like Willow, are not suitable to be planted in the highway. However, Bexhill residents are being encouraged to send their suggestions to Andy Piper, Forestry Officer by email to highways@eastsussex.gov.uk or by telephone on 0845 60 80 193.
