Press release

Lewes set for French invasion

Monday 30 April 2007

People in Lewes will be able to sample a taste of France this week when the Dieppe market arrives in the town.

On Saturday 5 May, ten Dieppe producers will be setting up their stalls in the Harvey’s Brewery Yard on North Court, on the route between Cliffe High Street and Tesco’s car park.

French produce including cheese, pastries, bread, cider, honey, coffee, sweets, meat, chicken, fruit and vegetables will be on sale. The market starts at 9.00am and will finish at 1.30pm.

East Sussex County Council, other local councils and Dieppe town have joined together to promote the local economies of both Sussex and Normandy. The market is part of the overall project to help local producers and businesses on both sides of the Channel.

The Lewes ‘Dieppe’ market is the return leg of the local producer initiative. At the end of March, the County Council’s Economic Development Team helped local producers from Sussex to sell their products in Dieppe.

The overall project – paid for by European INTERREG funding – also involves tourist attractions, hotels and other businesses. During March, a group from East Sussex toured the Normandy area and last week (25 April) their French counterparts came to East Sussex to work on joint projects and ways of promoting the Normandy-Sussex area.

More business exchange trips are planned with one coming up on May 11 when local businesses from East Sussex will be the guests of the Dieppe Chamber of Commerce.
