The County Council has been forced to make increases in Rider fares of around 7.5% following a succession of poor annual grant settlements from central government, and an increase in the annual contract price which covers rising fuel and running costs.
Adult single fares have risen by between 10p and 20p, although the maximum return fare is now capped at £5. Child fares remain at half the adult single or return fare.
Weekly tickets will rise in line with the standard fares, although these are now capped at £12 per week, a saving of £1 on the highest weekly price.
Fares in central Eastbourne and Hastings remain unchanged, as are Brighton Saver tickets at £4, whilst this is now the maximum return fare for certain specified services.
Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said, “This price rise is necessary to maintain Rider bus services at their present level. Unfortunately, as the County Council has had a succession of poor annual grant settlements from central government, costs have to be recouped where possible. We believe that this is better for people using public transport than reducing services. ”
