East Sussex PE Enrichment Day 2007

Friday 23 March 2007

More than 165 secondary school students are expected to take part in East Sussex’s first-ever Physical Education Enrichment Day, set to take place later this month.

The day has been organised by East Sussex County Council’s PE and Sports Development Team, in conjunction with a team of secondary school PE teachers and the University of Brighton, in response to a national initiative to increase support of children who have shown talent for PE and school sports.

The students, selected from 12 secondary schools from across the county (see list below), will attend a day-long multi-skills programme that includes problem solving, team building and inventive activities.

Councillor Rupert Simmons, Lead Cabinet Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, said: ‘This is the first time such an event has been organised and is an extremely useful exercise on two counts. Not only will it support and encourage students who are already actively involved with school sports, but will also provide feedback to help develop a more inclusive approach to teaching PE in schools. It’s all about getting more young people enjoying and participating in sports activities.”

Community Sport Leaders from mainstream secondary schools and community colleges, and volunteers from the University will work together with the students in five challenging activities. Each activity will be supervised by Community Sports Leaders from around the county and PE and School Sports teachers.

The day has been nationally recognised by the Youth Sport Trust, Leeds Metropolitan University and Roehampton University as being ‘very well thought-out’, ‘innovative and impressive’ and ‘very interesting and worthwhile’.

ESCC actively promotes excellence in sport in a variety of settings. The PE Enrichment day focuses on supporting talented pupils within the curriculum, and developing sport within school to encourage more pupils to get involved. This builds on the sports excellence which ESCC has already helped encourage across the county, as witnessed by ESCC’s recent ‘Sports Development Awards’ and ‘Toplink Sports Leadership Festival’, both held earlier this March.

The PE Enrichment Day will take place at the University of Brighton’s campus in Eastbourne.
