East Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Committee has recommended an extra £200,000 for economic development which will include work on the implementation of the Newhaven Port Access Road. The funding plan will now go to the full County Council meeting on 20 February for final decision.
Councillor Simon Kirby, Lead Member for Economic Development Projects says the Council is clearly demonstrating its commitment to improving the economic wellbeing of the area.
He said: “I am delighted that the Cabinet Committee has made this recommendation. The road is an essential element of our regeneration plans and will help to open up new business opportunities in the area, possibly creating thousands of new jobs and linking to the proposed new ferry terminal and port development area. We hope to be in a position to start work proper on the road by September this year.
“Things are really moving now for Newhaven and we should reach some big milestones in the coming weeks and months.”
The town also received a further boost with news of a definite timetable for the sale of the port. It has now been confirmed that Apollo Bannertown have to submit their proposals by 27 March and they then have two further months to negotiate. The final date for the completion of the sale is 27 May.
The news about the funding recommendation and confirmed timetable for the sale of the port follows a successful meeting recently involving the County Council and Lewes District Council and their French counterparts. The officials and councillors met up to check on the progress of the sale of Newhaven Port and the Newhaven regeneration plans.
