Young consumer crown up for grabs

Tuesday 30 January 2007

Four East Sussex schools and colleges are set to battle it out to find the county’s young consumer champions.

Teams from William Parker School, Hastings, Eastbourne Technology College, Uckfield Community Technology College and Chailey School will go head to head at Eastbourne Town Hall on 7 February when the Young Consumer of the Year Competition reaches the county final stage.

The winners will go forward to represent East Sussex in the regional final in March. The national title will be decided in Manchester in June.

The national competition is organised locally by East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service and the four teams contesting the county final have come through a preliminary round. Team members have to study topics ranging from consumer rights and responsibilities to safety and the environment.

The East Sussex winners will receive prizes for their school and individual prizes for each team member donated by our sponsors, Deans Place, Steamer Trading, Sussex Stationers, Walls of Fame, AC Cars and Advance Blockage Clearance Ltd.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: “This initiative helps young people know their rights and responsibilities when buying and selling. Our Trading Standards team run the competition along the lines of University Challenge and aim to make it both fun and educational. Our schools are up against hundreds of others from across the country who take on the challenge to become the top young consumers and win a £1,000 prize for their school.”

The county final starts at 1pm and spectators and supporters are welcome.
