Christmas parking and changes to parking in Lewes District

Wednesday 20 December 2006

On Christmas Day and Boxing Day there will be free parking in bays and car parks and single yellow lines. Parking charges will be enforced as usual at all other times including New Year's Day. There will be labels on pay & display machines to inform and remind people of the arrangements.

The changes to the on-street parking arrangements in Lewes that have been taking place over the last three months are now almost complete.

The main changes are:

  • in the west and north of the town, the area of paid parking and resident-only parking is being extended slightly further out and only apply Monday to Friday.
  • the charge in the outer areas increases to 20p per hour, £1.20 all day.
  • parking in the High Street will be allowed for up to two hours (currently one hour)
  • other localised changes to lines, signs and charges.

These changes are coming come into effect over the Christmas period and you are advised to look out for notices.

Controls in new parking bays come into effect when the sign is erected or uncovered. Until a sign is displayed, anyone can park there free of charge.

When new charges take effect at a particular machine, a notice is attached to the machine drawing attention to the new charges (but check the charges – some of the earlier notices were removed by vandals).

There are no changes to parking arrangements or charges in car parks around the town.
