“The Enchanted Garden” at Eastbourne Winter Garden featured students from Tideway School, Chailey School, Priory School and Heathfield Community College wearing fashions made from recycled clothes. The County Council won European funding for the event.
The show featured original live music, a catwalk show, films & visuals all set to an up beat soundtrack and was run by Spectral Arts, a company of artists, performers and technicians, who work on collaborative art-based projects.
Each school participated in a one-day workshop where students had the chance to produce garments from clothing supplied by Magpie Recycling based in Saunders Park, Brighton. The unwanted clothes were stapled, glued and sewn together, to make eye-catching designs. Ten pupils from each of the participating schools modelled the flamboyant colour-themed collections.
The workshops encourage students' individuality, help them to build confidence and work with artists to see how they can make a living from art. In addition to the catwalk show, a school performed two sessions of original music using percussion instruments made from junk.
Councillor Lock, Lead member for Transport and Environment said: "The average household bin contains many items that can be used again. As a council we are committed to reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and are developing better ways of dealing with our rubbish.
"Everyone in the community has a part to play in reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away. This fashion show is an excellent example of how we can reuse rubbish if we think creatively. We all have to rethink our attitudes to rubbish, not only can we reuse materials, we can reduce, recycle and compost.”
