School children to play at international music venue

Friday 20 October 2006

Talented young musicians are to perform at one of the country's most prestigious venues.

A group from Eastbourne Area Music Centre will sing at London's South Bank Centre as part of the London Philharmonic Orchestra's 'FUNharmonics' family concert on October 29.

The South Bank Centre is the capital's premier site for classical music and its 370-seat Purcell Room, where the children from the centre's youth choir will be performing, is famed for playing host to some of the world's most famous classical musicians.

Eastbourne Area Music Centre is run by East Sussex Music Service – part of East Sussex County Council – and the event is taking place thanks to the close partnership that the service has with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Arts Council England.

Cllr Rupert Simmons, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, said: "This is a real honour for the children involved and a recognition of their talent and their hard work. It is also testament to the dedication of the council's Music Service to bringing out the best in the county's musically-gifted young people."

East Sussex Music Service provides an instrumental teaching scheme in schools, music centre activities, a specialist 'A' level music course, a summer school, consultancy and advisory services to parents and students.

It also runs orchestral and chamber ensemble concerts, award winning regional and county orchestras, bands and choirs, and international tours and festivals.

Eastbourne Area Music Centre is managed by Marcus Plant and meets on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings during term time at Ratton School. Budding young musicians can take part in the programme of Early Years Music while young instrumentalists can join ensembles, bands, orchestras and rock groups as well as sing in choirs.

The youth choir is conducted by David Cane Hardy and accompanied by Peter Nickalls. Its membership is drawn from secondary schools and colleges in Eastbourne, Seaford and Hailsham and is open to all pupils between the ages of 11 and 18.

The choir will perform extracts from Little Red Riding Hood by Patterson when it performs at the South Bank Centre.
