Port announcement "a huge boost" for Newhaven

Tuesday 26 September 2006

Improved ferry services, more jobs and houses and better transport links for Newhaven could be the outcome of a decision made today by Newhaven Port and Properties Ltd in close consultation with East Sussex County Council and Lewes District Council.

Newhaven Port and Properties Ltd has asked Apollo Bannertown to develop their proposals for the future of the port. These include a guaranteed right of access to Newhaven port for Transmanche Ferries for 25 – 30 years and a significant investment into:

  • building a new ferry terminal
  • implementing the plan for a port access road
  • renovation of the seaward end of the harbour
  • renovation of the breakwater.

Apollo Bannertown have been given four months to develop their proposals. After this a final decision will be taken on the handover of Newhaven Port and Properties, its assets, and the responsibility for the port.

Councillor Simon Radford-Kirby, East Sussex County Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Economic Development Projects, said "This is just the outcome we have been pushing for and is a huge boost for Newhaven and the surrounding area. Apollo Bannertown’s proposals should bring much-needed investment into the port of Newhaven and guarantee the future of the ferry service. The building of the port road will unlock access to the Eastside Business Park which will have the potential to bring thousands of new jobs to the town and greatly improve transport links. This is an excellent outcome and shows the vital part the County and District Council have played in developing plans for the development of Newhaven and achievement of the Newhaven Masterplan.”

Councillor Ann De Vecchi, Leader of Lewes District Council, said "Newhaven Port has a great future and we look forward to working with the new owner”.
