Once again, East Sussex students are celebrating their best ever GCSE results with 56% of students gaining five or more A* - C grades, an increase of 1% on 2005.
Councillor Rupert Simmons, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness acknowledged the achievement. He said: ‘Students work hard for their GCSEs and it is encouraging to see so many successes. Results are also a testament to the skills and dedication of teachers, and the considerable support of parents and governors. We will continue to work hard to improve performance and drive up standards, and I’d like to congratulate our students and schools on their achievement.’
Provisional results reveal that six schools have made significant improvement on last year. They are:
- Thomas Peacocke Community College, Rye (23% more students passed 5 GCSEs with grades A* - C)
- Bishop Bell C of E School, Eastbourne (22%)
- Willingdon Community School (9%)
- Eastbourne Technology College (7%)
- Beacon Community College, Crowborough (7%)
- Hailsham Community College (6%)
In three schools, provisional results show at least 70% of entrants gaining five or more A* - C grades. They are:
- Claverham Community College (73%)
- St Richards Catholic College (82%)
- Bishop Bell C of E School (82%)
Provisional results show that the following schools had their best ever results:
- Beacon Community College (60%)
- Thomas Peacocke Community College (49%)
- Eastbourne Technology College (66%)
- Bishop Bell C of E School (82%)
In 2005 the number of pupils gaining five or more A* - C grades rose to 55% from 54% in 2004.
A more detailed analysis of grades will be available in the autumn once the figures have been submitted to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and any grading appeals processed.
