Press release

If you go down to the woods today

Wednesday 23 August 2006

Winnie-the-Pooh, the most famous and best-loved British bear, is celebrating his 80th birthday this year and the occasion is being marked in East Sussex with a teddy bears’ picnic at his home at Ashdown Forest.

East Sussex County Council’s Library Service has arranged the event for children and their parents and guardians on Thursday 24 August at the Ashdown Forest Centre at Wych Cross near Forest Row.

Winnie’s fans have snapped up all the tickets for this free event. They will hear stories and take part in craft activities and see a special performance by the Krazy Kat theatre company. Children and parents will also be able to enter a best-dressed teddy competition and then enjoy a teddy bears’ picnic.

Ashdown Forest provided the inspiration for Winnie-the-Pooh author, A.A. Milne to create the settings for the Pooh books. Famous place names such as 100 Aker Wood, Owls House, Pooh Bears House and Piglets House were created after the Milne family moved to the area in the mid 1920s. The Pooh stories have been loved by generations of children and their parents since they were first published in 1926.
