Cold callers frozen out at Bishopstone

Thursday 20 July 2006

People in Bishopstone near Seaford are helping to freeze out rogue traders with a designated ‘No Cold Calling Zone’.

East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service, Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership, Seaford Town Council, Sussex Police and BT have joined together to set up the zone.

Dallington villagers became the first in East Sussex to set up a zone last month. Bishopstone will join them when it launches its own scheme at 9.30am on Tuesday 25 July 2006 at the Green (junction of Marine Drive and Rookery Way), Bishopstone.

Setting up a zone is a warning to cold callers to stay away. Residents are provided with information that shows them how to deal with unexpected callers. There are about 550 households within the Bishopstone zone and consultation through local neighbourhood watch groups has indicated strong support for the scheme amongst local residents.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: "I am extremely pleased that we have helped to set up this initiative in Bishopstone. Rogue traders tend to prey on older people and the vulnerable and victims can have their lives ruined by the practices of some cold callers. Community safety is a top priority for us and this zone sends out a strong message that Bishopstone will not tolerate residents being harassed in this way. I look forward to other areas in the County organising similar schemes.”
