I spy a reading mission in libraries

Friday 23 June 2006

Children in East Sussex are on a mission this summer and their target is a reading challenge at their local library.

The annual reading game aims to get more children to read and enjoy books and the theme this year is the ‘Reading Mission’ with a focus on spy stories. The initiative, which ties in with the release of the blockbuster summer film, Mission Impossible 3, also offers those finishing the challenge the chance to win family prizes.

East Sussex County Council is promoting this national summer scheme in its libraries and schools and children of all ages can get involved throughout July, August and early September.

Children’s author, Ceri Worman will launch the Reading Mission on Wednesday 28 June when she will visit two schools at Crowborough and Wadhurst. Ceri will be talking to children about the scheme and her own books at St John’s CE Primary School, Crowborough at 11.00am and then with pupils at Wadhurst CE Primary school at 1.30pm.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: "It’s very important that we encourage our children to read and enjoy books. Reading is a key life skill and we want youngsters pick up the reading habit at an early age. The Reading Mission will get children involved in a fun reading game and I am delighted that the County Council’s Library Service is promoting this project.”

Children can start the Reading Mission challenge by asking for a collectors’ card in the shape of an attaché case at their local library. Every time they read a book, they can collect stickers, bookmarks and other great prizes. There will also be a medal for those who complete the challenge.

There are lots of Reading Mission events in libraries and other venues. Children will be able to meet authors and illustrators of their favourite books and take part in storytimes, rhymetimes and craft sessions. People can find further information from their local library and on the County Council’s website at eastsussex.gov.uk/readinggame.
