Hazel Court pipped at the post in quiz finals

Thursday 22 June 2006

A group of students from Hazel Court School in Eastbourne have just missed out on glory in a national consumer challenge quiz final.

Hazel Court pupils battled against twenty other special school teams from across the UK in the finals held at the Excel Centre in London this week. The Eastbourne School competed very well but lost at the semi-final stage of the event. The final, which was hosted by Liz Barclay from the BBC Radio Four ‘You and Yours’ programme was eventually won by a team from Bexley, Kent.

The competition, organised locally by East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service, is designed to help vulnerable young people to learn about consumer issues in a fun way. The quiz is highly participative and questions cover subjects such as signs and symbols, safety, shoppers’ rights and legal matters.

The competition aims to increase awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities in a way that is both instructive and enjoyable. It is open to young people with mild to moderate learning difficulties from schools within Sussex and across the Country. Contestants face questions on a wide range of consumer and safety issues.

Hazel Court School, in Larkspur Drive, had won its place in the final after winning the local heats held at Eastbourne Town Hall in May. All of the students that took part in the national finals received a medal, certificate and a bag of goodies to take away with them.
