County Council team best in the country

Wednesday 28 June 2006

Councillors and staff at East Sussex County Council are celebrating this week after being handed a top national award.

The authority has won the ‘Effective Top Team Leadership’ title at the prestigious Municipal Journal local government achievement awards. The Council was also commended in the ‘community leadership’ and ‘working with the voluntary and community sector’ categories.

The Municipal Journal (MJ) says that East Sussex has won the top team title because the Council has ‘been transformed by a strong and committed political and managerial leadership which is delivering strong services’.

Council Leader Peter Jones says the award is a fantastic achievement and reflects on the excellent work done by all councillors and staff. "The County Council is raising its performance and delivering quality services for our residents. We still have a lot of hard work to do but I believe the MJ award shows that we are well on our way to becoming one of the best authorities in the country.”

The MJ says that ‘both the leader and chief executive recognise that effective leadership requires a close working relationship on internal matters as well as a joint approach to raising the county’s profile and influence and have implemented this.’

East Sussex County Council came out top in the Effective Top Team Leadership Achievement of the Year Award, beating the other finalists – Tower Hamlets LBC, Canterbury City Council and Mid Sussex DC.

The Council was commended in the ‘community leadership’ category for its highly successful speed management strategy, the central theme of which is to work in partnership with local communities to create a safer road environment.

The County Council was also commended in the ‘working with the voluntary and community sector’ category. The MJ recognised East Sussex for work, which is being carried out jointly with East Sussex Age Concern to encourage more older people to take-up the benefits to which they are entitled. In the first 15 months of the scheme, benefits claimed exceeded £1.1m. Over 1,300 older people have been helped under this initiative with many more set to follow.
