Press release: Hazel Court flies the flag for East Sussex

Friday 19 May 2006

A group of students from Hazel Court School in Eastbourne will fly the flag for East Sussex in a national consumer challenge quiz final.

Hazel Court pupils battled through the recent local heat of the consumer quiz held in Eastbourne. They will now head to the Excel Centre in London to take part in the national final on Tuesday 20 June 2006. The final will be hosted by Liz Barclay from the BBC Radio Four ‘You and Yours' programme.

Teams from Hazel Court School and St Mary's School, Horam took part in the local heat of the competition at Eastbourne Town Hall. The local competition was organised by East Sussex County Council's Trading Standards Service.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Cabinet Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: "I would like to congratulate all the pupils who took part and wish Hazel Court all the best for the national final. The competition is designed to help vulnerable young people to learn about consumer issues in a fun way. The quiz is highly participative and questions cover subjects such as signs and symbols, safety, shoppers' rights and legal matters.”

The competition aims to increase awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities in a way that is both instructive and enjoyable. It is open to young people with moderate learning difficulties from schools within Sussex. Contestants face questions on a wide range of consumer and safety issues.
