More people parking in Lewes

Tuesday 25 April 2006

The number of people paying to park in Lewes during the last six months is up 12 per cent on the same period the year before.

The figures, which run from October 2005 to March 2006, continue the steady upward trend in the number of people parking in Lewes since the introduction of civil parking enforcement in September 2004.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport & Environment, said: "Some people have claimed that parking controls have driven people away from Lewes but this is emphatically not borne out by the facts”.

"The Lewes Parking scheme aimed to use space in the town centre more efficiently so that people coming in to shop or on business could park more easily, often closer to the particular business they wanted to visit. These figures show that we are succeeding.

"However, we are not complacent. We will continue to work closely with businesses and further improvements are due to be made to the scheme. We will shortly be introducing free short-stay parking near some local shops outside the town centre. More pay and display spaces in the town centre, will be introduced later in the year.”
