On Wednesday 10 May 2006, pupils from two special schools will be competing in the local heat of the consumer quiz at Eastbourne Town Hall. Teams from Hazel Court School in Eastbourne and St Mary’s School, Horam will be aiming to win the competition and represent East Sussex in the national final to be held in London in June.
Organised locally by East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service, the competition aims to increase awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities in a way that is both instructive and enjoyable. It is open to young people with moderate learning difficulties from schools within Sussex. Contestants face questions on a wide range of consumer and safety issues.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Cabinet Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: "I am delighted that our Trading Standards Service is once again organising this highly popular quiz for pupils with special needs. The competition is designed to help vulnerable young people to learn about consumer issues in a fun way. The quiz is highly participative and questions cover subjects such as signs and symbols, safety, shoppers’ rights and legal matters.”
The quiz has been sponsored locally by David Salmon. The national final in London will be hosted by Liz Barclay from the BBC Radio Four ‘You and Yours’ programme.
