East Sussex County Council was advised that 40 per cent of the crown of the tree needed to be removed urgently, but, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, it is illegal to detroy a nest.
Rooks finish nesting in June, but tree experts concluded that leaving the emergency work any longer could endanger pedestrians. Emergency work was carried out on Sunday 26 March, leaving the branch with the nesting rooks in place. This branch will be removed later, when the rooks have finished nesting.
