Lighter, brighter poles trialled

Wednesday 29 March 2006

A zebra crossing on Sedlescombe Road North is to be the site of the county’s first trial of beacon poles which are lit from the inside.

The poles are lit internally, making them much brighter and easier for drivers and pedestrians to see – particularly in built up areas.

The poles are being trialled following a petition from local residents to upgrade the zebra crossing to either a puffin or pelican crossing. The zebra crossing will be assessed for its suitability to become either a puffin or pelican crossing, later this year, but in the meantime the markings will be repainted and the poles installed to improve safety.

The work should be carried out by May this year.
