Press release

Cabinet Minister to visit East Sussex

Wednesday 22 March 2006

David Miliband MP, Cabinet Minister for Communities and Local Government, will be visiting East Sussex this week as part of a series of visits he is making to different parts of the country to discuss the future role, functions and form of local authorities in England.

The discussions he is holding will help form the backdrop to a White Paper on the future of local government which the Government is intending to publish in June.

East Sussex County Council will be hosting the visit during which the Minister will be discussing ideas with a wide range of people, including:

  • young people, including newly elected members of the youth parliament
  • representatives from local businesses, both large and small
  • leaders and chief executives from public sector organisations in East and West Sussex, such as councils, police, fire and health
  • representatives of the voluntary sector and users of public services.

During his visit Mr Miliband will be signing local area agreements (LAAs) with both East Sussex and West Sussex County Councils. These LAAs are three year agreements between local and central government aimed at jointly tackling the top priorities of partners in each of the counties. As part of the agreements additional funding will be available to kick start the work and if targets are met, reward grants of several millions of pounds will be made in four years’ time.
