Washable nappies save time and money

Monday 27 February 2006

Young families are getting a helping hand, with a new nappy loan scheme to save them hundreds of pounds and cut their weekly rubbish in half.

The nappy loan scheme has been set up by East Sussex County Council, working with Bexhill Sure Start and Hastings Ore Valley Sure Start. It encourages families to use washable nappies by providing a complete supply to families on a low income.

This will mark the seventh such scheme in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove, with 600 families having already taken part. By using the loan kits, families save hundreds of pounds compared to the amount they would have spent on disposable nappies.

The scheme is part of a wider campaign by the County Council to encourage families to ‘make the change’ to washable nappies. Eight million disposable nappies are currently thrown away every day in the UK, taking hundreds of years to decompose.

With just two years of landfill space left in East Sussex, making the change to washable nappies plays an important part in reducing the county’s waste, as this cuts one family’s weekly rubbish in half. For more about washable nappies visit www.nappies.org

To find out more about the nappy loan scheme contact your nearest Sure Start, either Bexhill Sure Start on 01424 218318 or Hastings Ore Valley Sure Start on 01424 448143. There are a limited number of packs available and a small joining fee.
