The Planning & Highways Sub Committee decided to grant planning permission to Veolia Environmental Services, for a Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS) and a Waste Transfer Station (WTS) once a legal agreement on highways and landscaping has been signed.
The HWRS would replace the Sunday only service at Uckfield. The WTS would allow household waste and recyclable materials to be bulked up for onward transport.
The development is one of a network of new facilities Veolia Environmental Services wishes to develop in order to divert household waste away from landfilling by ensuring much more is recycled and composted, and energy is recovered from residual waste. The Planning Committee decided on balance that the proposal could proceed because of the recognised need for waste facilities although there was a potential loss of employment land.
As the site is allocated for a Business Park in the Wealden Local Plan, the Secretary of State could call in the planning application and determine it himself.
The Secretary of State will have 21 days in which to decide whether or not to call in the planning application but he could extend the period. If he did decide to call in the application, a Public Inquiry would be held by an independent Inspector before a decision was made. If he does not call it in, then the planning committee’s decision stands.
The planning permission is subject to 27 conditions on matters such as noise levels and landscaping to ensure the development is suitable for the local area.
