The Freestyle Graffitti exhibition was held on Tuesday 21 February and showed off the artistic talents of the 15 young people aged 13–19 involved in the graffitti project, organised to let loose their creativity. East Sussex County Council’s Youth Development Service and graffiti artist Matt Sexton worked with the young people over 12 weeks to produce graffiti art on a huge scale, with pieces displayed on large boards.
Guests also had the opportunity to see ‘work in progress’ of the transformation of the building, with a huge graffiti art train painted down an entire section of the internal wall. The project is part of the ongoing transformation of the youth centre into a vibrant building for urban arts. Music workshops and funky street dance classes are already planned for young people aged 11 – 19 years, the first dance classes available from 24 February.
The young artists were presented with certificates by the Head of East Sussex County Council’s Youth Development Service, Hilary Lewis. Guests included Lead Member for Children’s Services, Councillor Meg Stroude, local police, district councillors, youth development workers, and teachers from local schools and art orgnanisations.
