New help with applications for Citizenship

Wednesday 25 January 2006

People applying for British Citizenship can now get help from a local registrar after the launch of a new service.

East Sussex County Council’s Registration Service can now help foreign nationals by checking their completed citizenship application forms. Registrars will also help to ensure that the correct documents are submitted to the Home Office.

For a £40 fee per application, the registrar will check the application form and documents and will provide certified copies, so that the passport and other original documents can be kept. This will allow the applicant to continue to travel while the Home Office considers the application.

All four registration districts in East Sussex – Crowborough, Eastbourne, Hastings and Lewes – offer the new service. All that people have to do is contact their nearest register office and book an appointment.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: "After the successful introduction of the Civil Partnership ceremonies in East Sussex, I am delighted that our Registration Service has added another string to its bow. This new service will greatly benefit people applying for citizenship and will ensure that all the correct documents are checked and verified.”

Registrars are keen to point out that the new initiative is not a ‘fast-track’ service and that they cannot provide any advice in relation to the content of any application for British Citizenship.
