Gilda Crescent provides services for older people, including respite and short stay places. There are three long term residents. The preferred option will allow these residents to remain in their home, and enhance and improve the centre. Eight beds would be dedicated for people coming out of hospital who still need some nursing and therapy. These would be run jointly with Eastbourne Downs Primary Care Trust (PCT).
Other options are to close Gilda Crescent and move clients into centres run by independent providers, or keep the centre open but run by someone else .
If the recommended option is chosen, qualified nursing and therapy staff provided by the PCT would work alongside the Council’s adult social care staff. The new services would add to work with the PCT and Eastbourne District General Hospital to tackle delayed transfers of care (so-called 'bed blocking').
In addition to allowing the three long term residents to stay in their home, the 20 respite care places, 16 Living at Home places and 12 day care places would also be kept. The Living at Home programme helps people to remain at home, return there after leaving hospital, or avoid going into hospital at all.
Notes to editors
The decision follows a review of services provided at Gilda Crescent in Polegate. A wide consultation process involved current users of the services and their relatives, carers, staff, and professionals from other areas including housing, health and transport.
