Hailsham library set for upgrade

Friday 16 December 2005

People in the Hailsham area can look forward to improved access and much better facilities at their local library.

East Sussex County Council is to carry out a programme of improvement work at the library in Western Road at a cost of £215,000. The upgrade includes installing a new lift to give better access to the upper floor, completely refitting and redecorating the inside of the building and changing the library entrance.

Library users can also look forward to more new books, on top of the £20,000 worth of new stock bought for the library during the year.

The work will start on Friday 23 December 2005 and will last for approximately ten weeks. During the closure people will be able to use any other library in East Sussex to renew items, return or borrow books or other stock, get information and book sessions on Internet computers. Library members can also check the catalogue and make reservations via the Council’s website at e-library.eastsussex.gov.uk.

During the temporary closure, local residents will also have use of a temporary building in the library grounds at Western Road. People can return books and borrow from a small selection of books, large print, audio cassettes and DVDs.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: "I am certain that any short-term inconvenience caused by the closure will be worth it when people see the completed scheme early next year.

"Facilities at the library are getting a much needed upgrade and access, particularly for people who are disabled, will be greatly improved. I am extremely pleased that we are carrying out this work at Hailsham which is part of an overall programme of improvements for libraries across East Sussex.”
