The Moreton Centre is being redeveloped jointly by the Adult Social Care department of the Council and health to provide 30 much needed places for intermediate care and rehabilitation including occupational therapy, physiotherapy and nursing.
This will increase the amount and range of appropriate care and support available for older people in the Hastings and the Rother areas when recovering from illnesses or operations. People using the new services will typically stay for six weeks before returning home.
"It has taken a lot of hard work to get to this point," said Councillor Keith Glazier, Lead Member for Children's and Adults' Services. "This project is vital for our work to provide increased access to the right kind of care for older people."
"East Sussex has the highest percentage of over 85s of any county in England, and we will increasingly need intermediate care services in the future."
The Moreton Centre was previously used as a residential care home until this ceased following a review. Since then, the centre has continued to be used to provide day care services while funding has been identified by health and Adult Social Care partners to provide the new services.
The £1.5m proposal involves a single storey extension, internal alterations to the existing centre and external landscaping work.
Local consultation will follow the submission of the planning application and a decision is expected by February 2006.
