School energy scheme wins council top award

Tuesday 29 November 2005

An environmentally-friendly heating system at Park Mead Primary School in Upper Dicker near Hailsham has gained East Sussex County Council a top award.

The Council has been ‘highly commended’ in the Government-sponsored South East Renewable Energy Awards for its school energy saving scheme.

Council Engineers installed the heating system in the new extension at Park Mead, enabling that part of the school to be heated almost entirely with renewable energy. The system uses natural energy from the ground to heat the extension.

The Renewable Energy Awards provided a double boost for the Council when it was also highly commended for its work on carbon management. This award recognises the Council’s commitment to reduce the impact that its energy use has on the environment.

Councillor Tony Reid, Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Corporate Resources, said: "We were delighted to be recognised for our achievements in these two key areas. As a community leader, this reflects our commitment to the environment and our continued efforts to explore ways to reduce the environmental impact of our energy use.”

The Energy Awards are sponsored by the Government Office for the South East, the South East England Development Agency, the South East England Regional Assembly and the European Union.
