East Sussex students take to the catwalk to spread the rethink rubbish message, modelling their own designs created from recycled scraps of material.

Four schools in East Sussex have been busy transforming rubbish into fashion in a series of workshops held over the past weeks. They came together to show off their designs in a fashion show on Tuesday 15 November, at 7.30pm at The Old Market Theatre in Brighton.

The fashion show was the culmination of a joint funded project between East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council as part of its continuing campaign to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Year eight students (aged 12 -13) from Tideway School in Newhaven, and Chailey School were among those to take up the challenge. They were given free reign to make outfits as flamboyant and colourful as they liked, and created their costumes from recycled materials over a one day workshop with local creative arts group, Spectral Arts.

Councillor Lock, Lead member for Transport and Environment said: "The average household bin contains many items that can be used again. As a council we are committed to reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and are developing more long term environmental solutions to waste management.

"Everyone in the community has a part to play in reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away. This fashion show is an excellent example of how we can reuse rubbish if we think creatively. We all have to rethink our attitudes to rubbish, not only can we reuse materials, we can reduce, recycle and compost.”

As well as the outfits on the catwalk, some of the students’ fashion sketches were on display at the event and in the programmes. Other students have been involved in producing music for the show, working with music and drama group Moving Sounds, and using instruments made out of old junk.
