Press release

School pupils wanted for young consumer competition

Tuesday 27 September 2005

Young people in East Sussex are being asked to take part in a national consumer competition that could lead to a cash bonus for their school.

Young Consumers of the Year involves hundreds of schools across the country, with pupils being tested on their knowledge of consumer issues including consumer rights, finance, food, health, safety, the environment and Europe.

The team with the top consumer credentials who go on to win the national final next year will gain their school a prize of £1,000.

Organised locally by the County Council’s trading standards service, the competition is open to teams of four from years 10, 11 and 12. It is both fun and educational and gives young people a practical understanding of their consumer rights.

Winners of each East Sussex heat will go through to the regional final to be held in Kent. They will join teams from all over the south east region and will battle for a place in the national final to be held in London in June next year.

Secondary schools in East Sussex wishing to take part must register their interest by Tuesday 11 November 2005. For more information about entering or sponsoring the event please contact Louise Baxter at trading standards on Eastbourne 01323 418224.

Notes to editors

The competition will be run along the lines of University Challenge and will test students of commercial current affairs and their rights and responsibilities when buying or selling goods and services.

Last year Seaford Head Community College achieved third place in the regional finals. For further information about the completion please contact Louise Baxter at East Sussex County Council’s trading standards service on Eastbourne 01323 418224.
