It means that a wormery, which has a recommended retail price of £59.95, can be snapped up for £25; a green cone for £14.95 – around 25% of its recommended retail price of £59.95 – and a Green Johanna for £31 against the recommended price of £75. Composters, which normally retail at £49.95, are available for £15.
Up to one third of the average dustbin is organic matter – largely food waste – which can be composted. Cardboard, paper, old bread, tea bags and egg shells can also be composted, while bones, cooked food, meat and fish can all be put into food digesters.
Councillor Matthew Lock, East Sussex County Council lead cabinet member for the environment, said: "By having a food digester or compost bin in your garden or a wormery on your patio, you will see a dramatic reduction in the amount of rubbish you put out for collection each week.
"You will also be saying goodbye to smelly bins and leaking rubbish bags. September’s offer is one not to be missed.”
To get the ball rolling, the Rethink Rubbish team is offering a free wormery, Green Johanna or Green Cone to the first ten East Sussex residents who phone requesting a free information pack. The number to call is 01273 482323.
Residents will be able to see the wormeries, composters, Green Cones and Green Johanna and ask further questions when the Rethink Rubbish bus visits the following locations in September:
- 2 September: Eastbourne Household Waste Recycling Site, St Philip’s Avenue
- 4 September: Lewes Household Waste Recycling Site, Ham Lane
- 10 September: Larkspur Drive, Eastbourne
- 11 September: Hastings Green Fair, Alexandra Park
- 23–25 September: Weald Wood Fair, Bentley Wildfowl, Halland.
Notes to editors
The units available are as follows:
Compost Units: take kitchen scraps, garden waste, cardboard and paper. They are ideal for most households, particularly those who don’t throw away much cooked food and do lots of gardening. September price £15 (RRP £49.95).
Wormeries: anything that has lived and died can be composted by worms. Soft organic waste such as vegetable peelings, tea leaves, coffee grounds and stale bread are ideal. The worms produce useful compost for pot plants and a liquid plant food. September price: £25 including delivery (RRP £59.95). To order, call Blackwall Ltd on 0870 844 3000.
Green Cones: takes meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit food waste and reduces it to its natural components with a very small residue. This is a food waste digesting system, not a garden composter. September price: £14.95 (RRP £59.95) if collected from a local garden centre or £24.95 to have it delivered. Call 0800 013 1304 to order.
Green Johannas: developed in Sweden, this system takes all food waste plus green garden waste and produces compost. September price: £31 (RRP £75) if collected from a local garden centre or £36 delivered. Call 0870 460 3627 to order.
