School test results continue to improve

Wednesday 24 August 2005

Provisional results of this year’s Key Stage 2 tests for 11 year olds show the number of pupils in the county achieving the expected level 4 or above continues to improve.

Following last year’s significant improvements, pupils have again achieved standards that are in line with the national average. Over the last two years, schools in East Sussex improved their results, with three per cent more pupils achieving level 4 or above in maths, exceeding the national rate of two per cent. Results for English matched national improvement rates, with four per cent more pupils achieving expected level 4 in English. The number of pupils reaching level 4 in science shows a slight decrease of one per cent, reflecting the national trend.

Councillor Rupert Simmons, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, said: "Helping teachers to raise standards of learning and achievement in the classroom is a council priority, and vital for the future of both individual pupils and the whole community. It is encouraging to see pupils continuing to achieve good results, but equally important that we continue to work hard with schools to raise standards even further.”

The provisional results for the 2005 tests bring the average number of pupils in East Sussex schools achieving the expected level 4, to:

  • 78% in English, compared to 74% in 2003
  • 75% in maths, compared to 72% in 2003
  • 86.4% in science, compared to 87% in 2003.

Key Stage 2 tests are taken by 10–11 year old pupils, and some achieved significant results, including:

  • 17 schools with at least 90 per cent of pupils achieving level 4 and above in English, maths and science
  • 33 primary schools improving their scores by at least 15 per cent.
