Council strengthens anti-bullying support

Friday 24 June 2005

Work to help reduce bullying in East Sussex schools and the wider community is moving up a gear.

East Sussex County Council has now published its anti-bullying strategy and announced that an anti-bullying caseworker, who will work directly with children and young people, is to be employed in the county later this year.

"The council wants to help to combat bullying wherever it occurs and these new initiatives will further strengthen the support that we offer”, said Councillor Keith Glazier, lead member for children’s and adults’ services.

"We believe that bullying is unacceptable and that everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. Our anti-bullying strategy and the prospect of a dedicated worker to help resolve incidents of bullying are a real boost and will help tackle this school and community safety issue.”

The new anti-bullying strategy is available on the council’s website at www.eastsussex.gov.uk/bullying. The strategy has five key aims that will ensure:

  • children and young people, and parents and carers feel confident that when they report incidents of bullying they know it will be taken seriously
  • schools have a range of strategies to help stop bullying taking place
  • schools have more opportunities to work together to tackle bullying
  • children and young people, and parents and carers have access to a range of anti-bullying resources
  • children and young people continue to influence the anti-bullying agenda.
The council is working with schools and youth organisations to develop clear and simple ways to report and record all incidents of bullying. Young people will be playing a key role in developing the strategy through the young person’s anti-bullying advisory group, through school councils, youth parliaments, surveys and local and regional youth conferences.
