East Sussex puts cycle routes on the map

Thursday 23 June 2005

Some of the finest cycle routes in the South East are to be found in East Sussex.

Now, East Sussex County Council has brought them together in a collection of free detailed route maps. These will be officially launched at the Cycle and Walks Festival, at Firle Place, near Lewes, on 9th and 10th July.

The colourful maps, produced with the help of funding from the EU, include some wonderful traffic-free rides suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

For example, there are many circular rides illustrated in the Off the Cuckoo Trail booklet. There is a map for each ride with notes and directional tips marked on it. Short-cuts are also shown for those who have bitten off more than they can chew! The rides are a mixture of on-road and off-road sections, generally along bridleways with a good surface. The approximate distances are shown with an estimated time for each ride.

The council has published them to help promote the county’s cycle paths to both residents and overseas tourists. It is also keen to encourage cycling, in general, as a form of sustainable transport.

For more details, or to obtain a set of maps, call East Sussex County Council’s cycling promotions officer, Adam Clamp, on 01273 482652 or email cycling@eastsussex.gov.uk.
