The interactive mobile exhibition bus – which visits schools, public events and community groups, has been hailed an outstanding success during its two years on the road.
The brightly coloured bus, which was developed by the council and the Science Museum, in London, encourages the public to think about their waste. It shows ways in which we can all reduce, reuse, recycle and compost their rubbish, thus reducing household waste which has to be dumped in landfill sites. Inside, visitors can browse among the multimedia terminals, video screens, games, quizzes and information displays.
The project has developed several unique secondary school activities, which capture pupil’s imagination. There is also a range of classroom activities, including a puppet show for primary school children.
During the past two years the Rethink Rubbish bus has attended 267 events around East Sussex and Brighton & Hove, and staff have talked to almost 30,000 people.
The project has achieved the sale of nearly 12,000 compost bins, water butts, wormeries, and food digesters between the period of July 2003 and March 2005.
Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: "The success of this project has been overwhelming. People of all ages are being inspired to think about their waste and we want to push this awareness even further and convert everyone to realise that that small changes really can make a big difference.”
