Press release

On your bike please!

Tuesday 31 May 2005

There are treats in store for workers who cycle to work on Bike2Work Day on June 15.

East Sussex County Council, Lewes District Council and Sussex Police are all backing this year’s Bike2Work Day – in a bid to promote the health and environmental benefits of cycling.

Cyclists, who take part in the event can take advantage of a free breakfast at the White Hart Hotel, in Lewes, between 8am and 9.30pm. There will also be a goody bag, containing cycling accessories, available for the first 100 people to arrive at the hotel, in the High Street.

Bike2Work Day is part of National Bike Week, in which more than 2,000 local cycling events and rides are expected to be held across the country. At least 300,000 participants will be taking part, most of whom will be new or returning to cycling. Last year more than 1,400 events attracted 250,000 cyclists

This year’s Bike Week aims to promote the benefits of cycling for health and fitness.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said: "Most commuters drive less than five miles, so our Bike2Work promotion encourages commuters to try cycling to work. They will discover that rush hour cycling in urban areas is typically faster than other means of transport. A bike is the cheapest of all vehicles to run, and parking is free.”

Councillor Lock added: "The county council has a commitment to cycling and has a year round programme of guided rides, which is available from all libraries, cycle shops and is available on our website”.

Buddy rides are also being organised from towns around Lewes – the aim being to encourage inexperienced riders to travel in groups for reassurance.
