Hitting the A27 tourist trail

Thursday 21 April 2005

The chairman of East Sussex County Council has hit the road to promote several tourist attractions that can be easily enjoyed within a day just off the A27.

Councillor Daphne Bagshawe did a whistle stop tour starting off at Middle Farm in Firle, then moving onto Charleston and nearby Berwick Church and ending up at Drusilla’s zoo.

"It was an excellent day designed to show what wonderful and varied tourist sites are on offer within the county boundaries of East Sussex for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

Middle Farm at Firle is a working dairy farm, well known for its national collection of cider and perry with 250 types on offer. Visitors can taste a few of these, go to the farm shop full of succulent delicacies and see the animals including pigs, ducks, donkeys and goats. The farm is committed to promote both local and British food whenever possible.

Further along the A27 lies Charleston, the country retreat for the writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. Its interior was painted by the artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell and is a unique example of their decorative style. Charleston hosts a number of special events throughout the year, most notably the Charleston Festival which is centred around talks and drama relating to literary, artistic and Bloomsbury themes.

Still on the artistic theme, Councillor Bagshawe’s travels took her to nearby Berwick Church which holds an impressive collection of murals also painted by Grant and Bell in the 1940s.

Leaving the world of art ands culture, Councillor Bagshawe ended up in the animal lovers’ paradise of Drusilla’s Zoo packed full of attractions for children and adults alike.
