Work is underway on developing the second Local Transport Plan (LTP2) which will guide how money is spent and what needs to be done to improve local transport in the county between 2006 and 2011.
People will be asked to comment on the draft LTP2 focussing on issues as varied as improving road safety, highways schemes, public transport, traffic flows and cycling routes. The county council and its partners want to build on the achievements, recently highly rated by government, which were set in motion after the first Local Transport Plan was agreed four years ago. These include:
- approval to progress better transport links like the Hastings to Bexhill link road
- improvements to make buses easier and more attractive to use
- better access to buses and community transport for people with a disability
- tackling traffic congestion
- improving road safety
- more and better pedestrian crossings and cycle facilities.
In addition, the county council will be looking at other initiatives to help younger people, particularly those on lower incomes, to get about while also focusing efforts on helping older people.
"It’s important for the county council to have the best possible plan in place,” said Councillor Matthew Lock, lead cabinet member for transport and environment, "This will set the scene for continuing transport improvements which are so important for residents, commerce and visitors
"The county council and its partners have achieved a great deal with the development of the first LTP and they will strive to achieve even more with the next one. We need to hear from the public to make sure that we’ve got it right,” he said.
The draft LTP2 follows wide consultation carried out last summer on key local transport issues and priorities for the county. It will be made available between February 28 and May 27 in libraries, and borough and district council offices and on the county council website at www.eastsussex.gov.uk/consultation. Comments can be received by the county council up until the end of May.
Notes to editors
This consultation is on the draft Provisional Local Transport Plan (LTP2). The Department for Transport has split the LTP2 process into two stages with the submission of a provisional plan required by the end of July 2005 and a final version by the end of March 2006.
