Fishmarket Road forms part of the busy A259 and the upgraded puffin crossing will make it safer for everyone to cross while also keeping the traffic running smoothly.
County council contractors are building the crossing as part of phase one of a major safety schemes for the town which began in October last year.
"The county council is committed to improving pedestrian safety and the upgrading of this particular crossing is one of a number of road safety schemes developed for the town after the public told us what improvements they wanted,” said Councillor Matthew Lock, lead cabinet member for transport and environment.
A puffin crossing senses when a person is crossing the road keeping the lights at red for traffic. This increases pedestrian safety allowing those who are slower more time to cross the road. It also prevents traffic from being stopped unnecessarily, unlike a pelican crossing where someone can press the button to stop the traffic but then walk away.
Contractors will start the works on February 25. While they are underway temporary traffic lights will be needed but these will only be used out of peak travelling times.
"It is inevitable that there will be some delays to traffic but every effort will be taken to keep these to a minimum,” Councillor Lock said.
