It received the thumbs up from the AA’s European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) after fatal and serious casualty figures for the years 2001–03 showed a marked reduction from 83 to 54.
"This is excellent news,” said Councillor Matthew Lock, lead cabinet member for transport and environment. "The priority of the county council is to have visibly better roads and we are committed to improving safety for motorists and pedestrians.”
A number of major local safety schemes along the route have been built by county council contractors, and its road safety team has been spreading the kill your speed message. All these initiatives have helped towards winning the EuroRAP ‘most improved’ road sections 2005 award.
"The county council can improve the safety of its roads, but ultimately, motorists must always drive within the conditions of the roads and stay within the speed limits. That way, we can be sure that casualty figures will reduce even further which must be everyone’s aim,” Councillor Lock said.
Specific local safety schemes carried out along the A22 include:
- Brambletye Bends, Forest Row – improved signing
- A22/C2, Wych Cross – traffic signals
- A22/A26 Blackdown roundabout – improved signing/lining
- Polegate crossroads – improved street lighting
- A22/the Triangle – junction improvement
- A22 Hailsham to Polegate – gap closures in dual carriageway
- speed reactive sign in Nutley supporting existing traffic calming
- fixed speed camera in Halland Village.
