Christmas trees stabilise sand dunes

Friday 17 December 2004

Old Christmas trees are once again wanted to help stabilise the dunes at Camber Sands.

For the past few years, Rye Bay countryside rangers have successfully used old Christmas trees to prevent permanent damage to the dunes by partially planting them to trap the sand blown around by the wind.

The dunes are owned by the County Council and need constant work to repair damage caused by trampling feet during the summer season. Plants would normally control the sand but these get destroyed by the visitors. The Christmas trees, which don’t grow, hold the sand in place while the plants re-establish themselves.

Christmas trees can be taken to the central car park at Camber and Tanhouse Furniture (opposite the Jempson Store) in Peasmarsh on Saturday January 8 from 10am until 1pm. Rangers are asking for whole trees only please, no cuttings or holly.

If you don’t live near Rye, you can still recycle your Christmas tree (no tinsel, baubles or fairies) at any of the Household Waste Recycling Sites throughout the county where it will be composted.
