It is hoping that last year’s massive 7,800 tonnes of cards recycled can be beaten by thousands more.
"Just throwing our rubbish into the bin to be taken to landfill is no longer an option as the main way of disposing of waste,” said Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment. "Everyone must take responsibility for their waste and separate it for recycling. "
"We throw away far too much instead of recycling. For example, according to national statistics, the amount of old clothes thrown away in the country over the festive season equates to the staggering weight of 80,000 reindeer. It is quite a statistic and shows how vital it is that we all play our part and reduce, reuse, and recycle our waste,” he said.
The Christmas card recycling is part of the national Woodland Trust scheme. During January everyone can take their Christmas cards to Tesco and WH Smith stores throughout the county. The cards will then be taken to paper mills where they will be processed into new paper products.
Other waste can be recycled at the household waste recycling sites, the local recycling banks, or through your doorstep collection scheme.
