Hoteliers foil advertising scam.

Wednesday 15 December 2004

A smooth talking salesman cold calling on hotels, has been sent off empty handed following prompt intervention by the Eastbourne Hotels Association, some local hoteliers, and the county council’s trading standards officers.

The salesman was calling on hotels offering advertising with the "Family Friendly Group.”

One hotelier became suspicious and called both trading standards and the Eastbourne Hotels Association.

Records showed no such company as Family Friendly Group existed. There was also concern about the advertising contracts. These were set out in such a way that the hoteliers were actually signing a blank bank standing order form.

When confronted by trading standards, the salesman quickly left the area and cheques and standing orders amounting to £4,000 were quickly cancelled.

"All small businesses need to be wary when approached by sales reps who seem to represent a genuine promotional opportunity for their business" said Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Cabinet Member for Community Safety.

"We would advise any small business approached by such advertising salesmen to carefully read the small print, and ask for hard evidence as to who they are and what they actually do before parting with any money” he said.

Trading Standards officers are aware of this type of dubious advertising sales tactic, and this scam was traced to the Blackpool area. Their enquiries into the case are continuing, and if anyone has had dealings with the Family Friendly Group they should contact 01323 418200.
