White Ribbon Day saw events in Eastbourne, Hastings and Lewes, with more than £1,000 raised for domestic violence support services. The County Council’s Domestic Violence Co-ordinator, Jacquie Ballard, said one in four families across the county are affected by domestic violence with a fifth of all reports coming from male victims.
The County Council works with a number of agencies supporting domestic violence victims, including an award winning project based at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings. The project aims to provide support which will encourage more victims to come forward and report the violence and to reduce repeat incidents.
"White Ribbon Day events are important to highlight the suffering some people face, and to make people aware that there is help out there,” said Lead Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Bob Tidy. "Domestic violence is a vicious crime and one which should not be tolerated,” he said.
Notes to editors
White Ribbon Day events started in Eastbourne on 25 November with a prize draw generously supported by local businesses and raising £400 for local domestic violence services. A further £900 was raised at a gig in Hastings when a number of artistes performed free of charge.
In Lewes on 2 December a number of agencies who work with domestic violence survivors gave presentations, concluding with the Dirty Footprints Theatre Company performing a series of short sketches depicting scenarios around the issues of domestic violence.
