Online fault reporting system wins national award

Friday 26 November 2004

A system devised in East Sussex that allows people to go online to report faults such as broken street lights, cracked pavements or litter problems has picked up a national award.

Access East Sussex is the brainchild behind the online fault reporting initiative which has been rewarded with a top prize from the Association for Geographic Information (AGI). The East Sussex partnership came first in the ‘innovation & best practice in local government’ category, beating off the challenge of 26 other UK authorities to win the AGI award.

The East Sussex system enables residents to report a variety of faults without the need for searching for the right authority, council building or officer concerned. It is an online ‘one stop shop’ that directs people to the right council team, reducing the need for phone calls, letters by post or face-to-face meetings. All sorts of problems can be sorted out on the Internet system including issues on roads and pavements, traffic lights and street lights, rubbish, street cleaning, litter bins and dog bins, graffiti and beach pollution.

Residents can report a fault through East Sussex County Council’s website at www.eastsussex.gov.uk/fault/ or on any of the district or borough council websites. Those without access to a computer can use Internet computers for free at all main county council libraries.

Commenting on the award, Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for e-government, said: "The County Council and its partners in Access East Sussex want to provide more services online and make it easier for people to find the information they want and get in contact. This fault reporting system is a prime example of that work and I am delighted with this award from the AGI.

"It’s another feather in the cap for East Sussex – earlier this year, the County Council’s website earned the Plain English Campaign’s coveted Internet Crystal Mark for its site, putting it in the top 4% of all council websites”.
