Improving Heathfield High Street

Wednesday 24 November 2004

Plans for further works to Heathfield’s town centre to make it easier for everyone to get into shops and businesses are on show to the public.

Focussing on the north side of the High Street between Streatfield and Cherwell roads, the improvements are designed to provide better access for everyone and to improve the economy of the town.

The county council is working on the scheme together with Heathfield Partnership Trust Ltd, Wealden District, and Heathfield and Waldron Parish Councils plus representatives from the business community.

It will see ramps and steps to help pedestrians, and in particular those with mobility problems, get into shops and businesses. A pedestrian crossing will be improved and a new loading bay for shops will be created to stop delivery vehicles obstructing the road and pavement.

"Work on this scheme will start in January and will continue the excellent work already achieved elsewhere in Heathfield High Street,” commented Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment.

"It will be a great investment for the area, supporting the economy of this rural community, and providing new facilities for everyone. I would urge as many people as possible to take a look at the plans ” he said.

Funding is being provided by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) market towns Initiative, and Wealden District Council with matched funding from the county council through its Local Transport Plan.

The plans are on show at Heathfield Library and the Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council offices.
